- A French Gothic style limestone gargoyle. 19th century. The
fabulous winged beast emerging from a hewn base incised with three
descending rows of stylized feathers, the arched neck and face carved
with ears flattened back, nostrils flared, eyes wide and mouth open,
perhaps to shriek, to keep at bay the threat of evil entering a sacred
space, the back carved with a descending slope opening to the mouth. Height:
